Among the immense production of Philip Grass, string quartets represent a reference point where the author is able to synthetize the different composition experiences of his almost fifty-year career. From movie production (for example, Quartet No. 3 for Mishima by Paul Schrader) to the “pure music” of the Fifth Quartet, every nuance of Glass’ personality is reflected in these string quartet scores which require virtuous executors.
His music is always able to create a connection with the audience even when the author chooses more intimate atmospheres, for example quartet no. 4, a moving eulogy for AIDS victims in memory of artist Brian Buckzak.
