A rarely performed title and for the first time performed at the Teatro Grande will be Don Quichotte by French composer Jules Massenet, which will be staged on Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3:30 p.m. Coming towards the end of his life, Massenet felt irresistibly drawn to the figure of Don Quixote as the embodiment of a classicism, both heroic and sublime, that was now drawing to a close. Only a few scenes from Cervantes’ masterpiece flowed into the opera, and great importance was given to the character of Dulcinea, who becomes the opera’s co-star. Within the score, fine details are found that make this title a masterpiece of Romantic literature, delineating melancholy and dreamy characters.
